Lugansk city guide
Lugansk city is located in the heart of the picturesque steppes and plains, in the easternmost part of Ukraine. This city can be considered as a greatest project of Catherine the Great, and also of the Scottish engineer, Karl Gascoin. He was invited to explore hard coal and iron ore on the territory in the valley of the river Lugan. Later, he and his countrymen formed the backbone of the Lugansk plant, which was the first blast furnace in Ukraine. Thus began the history of the city, which changed its name twice.
The first renaming - in Voroshilovgrad - took place in 1935. In 1958, the historical name returned, but only until 1970. In 1990, the leapfrog name ended, the original name returned forever.
The first settlements appeared in the era of the Early Paleolithic. In the copper and bronze centuries, the region was inhabited by cattle-breeding and agricultural tribes of pit, catacomb and logging archaeological cultures. Numerous monuments of the Scythian - Sarmatian time (7 - 3 centuries BC), as well as burial grounds of the Saltovo culture (8 - 10 cc.) were found on the territory of modern Lugansk.
In the times of Kievan Rus, most of the land was part of the sphere of influence of the Pereyaslav Principality. Seversky Donets then ran an important route from the Sea of Azov to the depths of the Chernigov and Pereyaslav princedoms. In the 10th - 11th century the nomadic tribes lived there. In 1223 - 1224 the region was captured by the Mongol-Tatars. In the 17th century, a number of guard fortresses and fortifications were built to protect the southern borders. The bulk of the populations of Lugansk region were fugitives from different localities of Ukraine and Russia, to which, in time, Cossacks from the Zaporozhye Sich joined.
In 1670 - 71 the population supported the popular uprising led by S. Razin, and in 1707 - 1708 - K. Bulavin's insurrection. The next stage in the development of the Luhansk region is connected with the creation of the Ukrainian line, which was supposed to serve as a defense against the attacks of the Turkic peoples. At the beginning of the development of fortifications, Serbs, Croats, Montenegrins settled here, which led to the creation of a territory called Slavyanoserbia.
In the first half of the 18th century, Lugansk region has found deposits of coal. In the second half of the 18th century, it becomes an important industrial region.
