Kamyanets-Podilskyy
Kamianets-Podilskyi is a delightful old town in west Ukraine (see map) with an imposing castle surrounded by shear cliffs and a picturesque old town rising above a horseshoe-shaped meander in the river Smotrych. The scenery is fantastic — a combination of cliffs and woods and endearing, partially old buildings. A lot of work is being done in the old town, and it's becoming more and more tourist-friendly and picturesque.
Kamianets-Podilskyi is a thousand years old and has a very colorful history. Today's relatively monocultural status is quite an exception from the rule. There are numerous churches and old historic buildings that line uneven cobblestone streets. It's a perfect place for a full day's trip or a full weekend of walking and dining in local cafes and restaurants. Despite the unique sights and spectacular setting, Kamianets-Podilskyi remains quite under-commercialized. The old town and fortress are quiet, with few cars in sight.
