Looking out the window of the Edelweiss hotel at dawn (you can book this very same hotel here)

This pristine area is a 45 minute walk through the forest from "Beskyd" station on the Kyiv-Uzhhorod railway

Looking down the valley at the break of dawn

Early morning walks here are a real treat

Tiny fir breaking through the snow

The mountains visible here are between 800 and 1600 m. in elevation

Villagers store hay this way. Later in the winter or spring they will get to this haystack and use it for animal feed

The hillsides are dotted with these haystacks

Even in remote Verkhniy Studenyy new private homes and lodgings are being built. At the same time, structures from Soviet times have been abandoned.

The main lift (tow) at Verkhniy Studenyy. Last year a ticket cost 2 UAH, this year (2005) 3 UAH. The run is about 800 m. long and wide enough to allow several different descents down the mountain

This haystack has been depleted. The one in the background may be next

This Christmas tree is decorated with orange ribbons, Yuschenko's presidential campaign color. Most voters in the Carpathian region voted for Yuschenko

Skiers on the lift with Verkhniy Studenyy village in the background

Homestead on the edge of the village at the break of dawn

Back at Beskyd train station. The sign reads "Welcome to Transcarpathia"
