Khotyn Photo Gallery

Khotyn is a small town in western Ukraine located in between Kamianets-Podilskyi and Chernivtsi and home to one of Ukraine's most famous fortresses that dates back to the late Middle Ages. There's not much else to see in Khotyn, so it's best to spend a half-day or so there and combine the trip with visits to other nearby sights. The bus ride to Kamianets-Podilskyi takes about an hour, and from there it's an overnight train ride to Kiev. In the other direction, it's perhaps 2 hours to Chernivtsi, from where one can take the train to Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv.

I like this photo a lot = the best and highest quality photos (in our opinion).

Passing through the outer wall of the fortress.

There is an Orthodox church within the fortification walls.

A soon-to-be-opened museum exhibit will feature artifacts from the fortress site and local.

Entrance to the church, now closed.

This is what the basement looks like. Not a safe place to scramble around.

The building at right is the well.

Back in the small town of Khotyn. A cheese factory.

WWII monument. "No one is forgotten. Nothing is forgotten."

Ukrainian churches are often painted very bright colors.

The local cinema.

Monument to the "heroes of the Khotyn Uprising of January 1919," when local Ukrainians began a revolt following Bessarabia's declaration of union with Romania.

This plaque marks the headquarters of the leaders of the uprising.
