Pictures of Foros, Crimea

Foros is an small, expensive resort west of Alupka that was upscale even during the Soviet era. It has a nice center with shady parks and decent restaurants, bars, and stores of many kinds.

Buses and minibuses run every 15 to 30 minutes between Sevastopol and Yalta, so getting to Foros is not a problem if you do not have your own car. However, you will have to walk down the road half a kilometer or more to reach the actual town of Foros. If you haven't got a place to stay, there are always old ladies at the roadside with "kvartira" signs ('apartment').

Near Foros is the juniper covered, undeveloped Cape Sarych, a favorite camping spot for backpackers. Further to the west is Laspi Bay, with a string of sanatorias. Further still is the nature preserve of Cape Aya.

I like this photo a lot = the best and highest quality photos (in our opinion).

Monument to Yuriy Gagarin, the first man in space

There is a nice, shady park in the center of Foros.

Nearby are a number of good grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants.

Foros post office

Despite the high cost of real estate on the South Shore of Crimea, empty "skeletons" like these are a common sight.

Alongside the road above Foros is a well-equipped campground for automobile tourists and backpackers.

If you come here without having reserved a room in advance, old ladies with signs like these will accommodate you. You'll find them along the road and at busy intersections.

The majestic massif of Cape Aya rises to the west.
I like this photo a lot
Unlike most of the Black Sea coast, Cape Aya is part of a nature reserve and is completely undeveloped.

Every change in the weather is reflected on the sea.

There is a small string of sanatoriums along the shore. The beaches beyond are inaccessible.

Unfortunately for surfers, the waves in Crimea are not high or reliable enough to surf.
