Pictures of Chernivtsi: One of Ukraine's Prettiest Towns
Chernivtsi is a large town (around 300 thousand inhabitants) and regional capital in western Ukraine by the Romanian border. It has a large historic center and is nice to walk around and photograph. About 70% of Chernivtsi residents speak Ukrainian, by my estimates.

Saint Dukhivskyy Orthodox cathedral
Interior of cathedral
Chernivtsi is a town of many churches and confessions.
Cathedral towers from behind
Chernivtsi is the only Ukrainian city I know that сalls its central street "main street" (Головна).
Looking down Zankovetskoy Str.
I'm sure this movie theater used to be a more happening place than it is now.
This huge, unrestored church isn't even shown on the city map!
Greek Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Hall of Organ and Chamber Music, also a former church
Colorful old homes like this are characteristic of historic cities in western Ukraine.
Saint Nikolay (Mykola) Orthodox church, founded in 1939
Here's a close-up of those strange tilted columns that exaggerate the sensation of looking up at something very high.
Just an old building in the quiet historic center. Note the cobblestone streets everywhere.
Another Orthodox church of St. Nikolay

Nice old building on the corner of Main Street
Is this a war zone? No, just some digging and long-term reconstruction going on.
A wider view
These kinds of buildings are sure nicer to live in than high-rise concrete block apartment complexes.
Chernivtsi State University, originally the residence of Bukovyna Metropolits, built by Czech architect Jozef Glavki between 1864 and 1882.
This has to be the most stunning university in Ukraine.

An old building in the park across from the university

A beautiful part of town — the square in front of Chernivtsi's Philharmonic Hall, lined by Beethoven Str. and Tschaikovskyy Str.
The "Hall of Culture" building next to the Philharmonic Hall
The majority of these buildings date from the late 1700s.
Behind the Philharmonic Hall there is some restoration going on. This is what scaffolding in Ukraine usually looks like.
A short street with a Jewish name. As I understand, there was a large Jewish community in Chernivtsi.
Another nice little street
