Berdychiv is about 40 km south of Zhytomyr and is an important historic Ukrainian town with Jewish roots. The town has a charming old center, but the greatest sight to see is the fantastic Carmelite monastery that is currently being restored. Some day it will be a real attraction. Berdychiv itself is small (under 100 thousand inhabitants), so it's a good destination for a half-day or day trip. It is most easily reached through Zhytomyr by car or bus.
