Ukraine's Train Ticket Prices to Rise 28% in 2007
February 12, 2007
Starting March 1, 2007, the cost of passenger train tickets in Ukraine will go up by 5% every two months, amounting to an increase of just under 28% by the end of the year. According to Delo magazine, 2nd class "coupé" tickets from Kiev to Lviv that today cost 83 UAH ($16.50 USD) will cost 105 UAH ($21) in November. Train tickets rose even more significantly in 2006.
In Ukraine, the cost of tickets often varies from train to train leaving for the same destination depending on the age and condition of the carriages. Prices are set by the national railway company Ukrzaliznytsia together with the Ministry of Transportation and Communication.
The planned rise of 25% still won't cover losses. Railway workers claim that rates need to be at least doubled to generate profit.
Visitors to Ukraine can expect transportation costs — traditionally very low — to go up year by year until they reach the level of central European countries.
