Discount Airlines in Ukraine: WizzAir

Article created: July 28, 2010

As of 2007-2008 there is now one low-cost airline operating within Ukraine — WizzAir. The biggest discount carriers, such as RyanAir, do not yet have any flights to Ukraine, but there is hope that RyanAir might enter Ukraine soon, seeing that they have now assimilated Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary.

WizzAir flights to and from Ukraine

Not too long ago Ukraine got its first discount airline - WizzAir. At the moment there are flights between Kiev Borispol airport and the following cities:

  • Antalya (AYT) Turkey
  • S. Angelo (TSF) Italy (near Venice)
  • Lübeck Blankensee (LBC) Germany (near Hamburg)
  • Dortmund (DTM) Germany
  • Pyrzowice (KTW) Poland (near Katowice)
  • Cologne/Bonn (CGN) Germany
  • London Luton Airport (LTN) United Kingdom
  • Memmingen-Allgäu (FMM) Germany (near Munich)
  • Sandefjord (TRF) Norway (near Oslo)
  • Simferopol (SIP) Ukraine
  • Stockholm Skavsta (NYO) Sweden (near Sweden)

There are currently also two connections from Lviv:

  • S. Angelo (TSF) Italy (near Venice)
  • Dortmund (DTM) Germany

It seems likely that new routes will be opened in the coming months/year. Check out the WizzAir route destination map.

If you book in advance prices can be quite low, even for peak summer months. The prices are rarely as low as some RyanAir discount flights, but RyanAir doesn't yet fly to Ukraine.

Many Ukrainians are so used to the prohibitive cost of international air travel that they can't believe that there are now flights to Europe for such a small amount of money. Not long ago one could expect to pay at least $350 USD for any flight in a western direction.

Buying WizzAir tickets

WizzAir tickets must be bought online after registering at their site and entering credit card information. Both Ukrainians and foreigners can purchase tickets online. The language of the site can be changed on the right-hand side.

Once on board, everything costs money, including snacks and water. Be prepared.

Bikes can be transported for about 40 Euros.

RyanAir flights near Ukraine

RyanAir doesn't yet fly to Ukraine, but there are some airports close by on its Route Map. Rzeszow, Poland, in particular is within close striking distance of the western Ukrainian border. You'll just need to take a bus from the airport to the the Rzeszow train station, then take a train to Ukraine (more expensive) or to Przemysl. From Przemysl you'll take a bus from the train station exit to the border, and from there you'll walk across the border, then take a bus to Lviv, and then a train to whatever your final destination is.
